Lethbridge City Council votes to delay implementation of curbside organics collection

The City of Lethbridge won’t be rolling out an organics collection program for at least a few more years.

Council has voted 7-2 in favour of a motion to have options for green bins included in the 2022-2031 Capital Improvement Plan.

According to City Administration, the resolution’s approval means a curbside organics program won’t be seen until at least 2023.

Councillor Jeff Carlson presented the Official Business Resolution on Tuesday, saying he believes it’s the right course of action at this time.

He says he doesn’t believe organics collection should be looked at outside of the regular Capital Improvement Plan because of its significant capital investment and ongoing operational charges.

Mayor Chris Spearman and Councillor Jeffrey Coffman were the two dissenting votes.

Spearman says he opposed on principle, saying council earlier created a policy to aim for organics diversion by 2021 and he’s disappointed to see that goal slip to 2023.

Prior to Tuesday’s resolution, the tentative plan was to start offering organics collection to small group of residents next spring, with a full roll out in 2021.
