Controlled burn planned at Iron Spring Transfer Station

Lethbridge County is advising the community about a planned controlled burn.

As part of annual maintenance at the Iron Spring Transfer Station, the burn will start this week. The station is about 15 minutes northeast of Picture Butte, and the County says depending on weather conditions, work should be ongoing for the next three to four weeks.

During that time, you might spot smoke coming from the site.

Only yard waste – like leaves, branches and weeds – and untreated wood will be burned, as per the Lethbridge County Fire Bylaw.

Officials say contractors have applied for a burn permit and completed a fire safety plan to tackle any risks that could arise from the work.

Additionally, they have created a fire break around the site, assembling equipment and water trucks to extinguish the burn. If wind gusts pass 25 kilometres per hour, workers will extinguish the flames until conditions improve.

If you see any smoke or flames in the area of the Iron Spring Transfer Station that are concerning and might not be a part of the controlled burn, call 911 to report the fire.

Officials are reminding everyone that burn permits are needed for any controlled burning. More information is available at the Lethbridge County website.
