Local theatre celebrates ‘Star Wars Day’ with vintage screening

In a galaxy not so far away, Lethbridge fans can celebrate May 4 or Star Wars Day, “May the fourth be with you” at the Movie Mill.

Co-owner Chelsea Bretzke says the local theatre is thrilled to bring in all the Star Wars films in the franchise. “We’ve done the first three trilogy. And now we’re on four, five and six. I personally love the original trilogy. We’re excited The Empire Strikes Back fits in for May 4. I think it’s a great one.”

Last year, the Movie Mill screened Return of the Jedi for May 4. The Empire Strikes Back is now playing, prior to the weekend.

“We’ll continue on all the way through seven, eight and nine,” Bretzke adds. “If you want to see every single Star Wars in 2025 on the big screen, I don’t know where else you can do that.”

According to Bretzke, there may be some special guests May 4 to take some photos with and a meet and greet. “We may have some exciting people for Star Wars fans to interact with.”

On Saturday morning, there will also be a sensory friendly screening of The Empire Strikes Back.

Bringing back the Star Wars franchise on the big screen has been a lot of fun, Bretzke notes. “It’s been like a pretty steady trickle.”

“We’ve definitely had steady attendance. Star Wars fans are coming out and loving it. They’re enjoying it. They’re letting us know, ‘this is so great we get to see these, and I’ve never seen this one in the theatre or I remember going to this one in the theatre.’ There’s like generations coming together,” adds Bretzke. “We just love that about the marathon. The fandom gets to be passed down.”

Episodes four, five and six will be featured in a marathon May 31. “If you want to sit down and watch them all, that’s also available,” notes Bretzke. “That’s a fun day for people to come out that are the hardcore fans.”

“There’s no fans like Star Wars fans,” says Bretzke. “Well, no, we’ve done Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter – they’re all pretty fantastic.”
