The Southern Alberta Art Gallery welcomes spring with two new exhibitions celebrating youthful creativity opening this Saturday.
The Lower and Library Galleries feature Arts Alive and Well in the Schools, the long running partnership with the Lethbridge School Division showcasing works by area K-12 students. The Upper Gallery hosts Generative Prompt, a group exhibition of local high school students working in an artist mentorship model with Lethbridge-based artist Michelle Sylvestre, while the Shop at SAAG features the stunning botanical watercolours of feature artist L.C. Cariou.
“As part of our commitment to encouraging connection, reflection, education and inspiration through contemporary art, the Gallery is pleased to offer admission by donation through July 26,” notes SAAG.
In 1976 the SAAG opened its doors, and the following year made a commitment to providing formative opportunities for Lethbridge students. Now in its 48th year, it is estimated Art’s Alive has exhibited nearly 17,000 pieces over the decades.
Generative Prompt began with monthly mentorship meetings, which guided the students through steps of material experimentation, creation and concept formulation. Through the guidance of a practising contemporary artist, this project offers interested high school students an in-depth opportunity to learn the possibilities of contemporary art practice, from artwork creation to presentation in their own thematic exhibition.
