An RCMP officer involved in an incident where he used his stun gun in June 2022, is said to have done so legally.
On Thursday Alberta Serious Incident Response team has released the findings of their investigation into the June 11th, 2022 incident in the Pincher Creek RCMP detachment. According to officials, the officer under investigation was called in to help local police transfer an individual from the Pincher Creek detachment to the Brockett RCMP detachment.
According to the report, the man refused to be handcuffed for the trip between the two detachments and physically resisted officers attempts. The man is also reported to have refused to hand over a book and glasses he had with him, which according to the report “officers believed could be used as weapons of opportunity.”
The RCMP officer who was under investigation is said to have used his stun gun twice, reportedly giving other officers to put handcuffs to the man and move forward with the transfer without and further incident.
In their report ASIRT officials say the use of force was “proportionate, necessary, and reasonable. As a result, there are no reasonable grounds to believe that an offence was committed.”
ASIRT investigated the incident by conducting interviews with two civilians, one of whom was person who was incarcerated and five police officers including the officer under investigation. Along with the interviews investigators also reviewed video servielance from the Pincher Creek RCMP detachment and inside the police vehicle used to transport the detainee.
