Town councillor announces her bid for Coalhurst mayor seat

After serving as a town councillor for the past four years, Deborah Florence is announcing her candidacy for mayor of the Town of Coalhurst.

In her announcement, Florence says she plans to bring her proven experience and unwavering dedication to guide the town into a new era of growth. She says serving as a councillor has been an honour, but she has witnessed both the hurdles the community faces and the possibilities it has.

“As Mayor, I will lead with integrity, compassion and a focus on practical, sustainable solutions that benefit every resident,” Florence says.

She adds the town is at a pivotal moment where the town needs leadership to prioritize key issues like infrastructure development, housing attainability and sustainable growth.

Streamlining the processes, improving access, and creating an environment that empowers people and projects to move forward, protecting essential infrastructure at the same time, are major priorities for the candidate.

“I believe in showing up—being seen, heard, and fully engaged in our community. Leadership is not about doing it all; it is about listening, supporting, and creating space for others to thrive. I lead by example, I’m responsive and I stay connected to the community.”

“I believe in a pro-business approach built on smart, strategic planning to make Coalhurst a community of choice—for families, entrepreneurs, and service providers.”

She adds council’s role is not to do everything but to create the space and conditions for others to succeed. Over the past four years, she says she has been proud to work as part of a council that has laid the groundwork for meaningful progress—modernizing outdated policies, and strengthening local governance while setting the stage for long-term sustainability.

“I believe in a united Coalhurst—where every voice is heard, every person is valued, and every neighbourhood is supported,” she says. “Leadership means showing up, listening, and leading by example. I am committed to being present and engaged in every corner of our community—and leading with both servant-hearted humility and bold, decisive action.”

Florence will be on the Coalhurst ballot during the October 20th municipal election. Nominations close September 22nd.
