In Lethbridge, The Annie Effect continues to inspire many people in our community.
On June 20, Annie Olsen would be turning three years old.
However, on Oct. 6, 2022, at only three-and-a-half-months old, Annie passed away in her sleep. Annie left behind her mom Bekah, her dad and five siblings.
Bekah is committed to helping others through Annie’s memory with the focus of lifting others, just as Annie did.
“As we approach the third anniversary of the passing of our sweet baby Annie, we’re reaching out to the community to join us in honouring her memory and the memory of children gone too soon,” Bekah says.
To celebrate what would have been Annie’s third birthday is the third annual community collection drive.
Bekah’s overall message to people is to know the value, meaning and importance of helping our community. “Especially with so many families coming into Canada every month from varying countries that don’t have anything. They have these sweet little babies they don’t know how to feed or take care of, and diapers and formula are expensive.”
The goal is to help other families provide for their babies.
These gifts, suitable for three-year-old girls or boys, will support Lethbridge Family Services newcomer families and Angel Tree children, spreading the love and light Annie embodied.
Bekah would also like to continue the diaper, formula and baby wipes drive for as long as possible. “Because it’s such a high need for LFS’ Angel Tree.”
“I’d love for people to know the value and meaning behind this is to be able to help other people in our community in honour of Annie,” Bekah adds.
Last year, Bekah notes, there were close to 7,500 diapers donated and approximately 300 toys donated. “I’d love to get close to 10,000 diapers this year.”
Gifts and baby items can be dropped off at LFS north weekdays until June 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Donations can also be dropped off at the June 20 event at 6 p.m. at Coulee Creek Park, Bekah adds. “We’ll have food trucks, cupcakes, cookies and we’re doing a balloon release at approximately 7:15 p.m. They’re biodegradable, so they’re OK for the environment.”
“If people choose to attend the event, they don’t have to bring something. It would be wonderful, extremely valued and needed. But, at the same time, I want them to just come and be a part of something that is really special.”
