60 tickets issued in a targeted LPS traffic operation

A targeted police operation resulted in 60 traffic offence violation tickets for everything from speeding and stunting to excessive exhaust noise and no insurance.

According to Lethbridge Police Service officials, “red-flagged” two motorcycles engaged in a street race and also issued two Immediate Roadside Sanctions. Police towed one vehicle for no insurance and three drivers received warnings.

According to police the enforcement project, which was launched in 2022, will continue throughout the summer to address high-risk and nuisance driving behaviours including excessive vehicle noise, racing and stunting, which occur in all areas of the city.

A statement from the police reads, “Drivers are reminded there will be zero tolerance for offences and contraventions under the Traffic Safety Act and Vehicle Equipment Regulations will result in tickets. Any repeat offenders who have not remedied previously identified and enforced equipment violations may be subject to a seizure of their license plate and vehicle registration.”

The statement adds this could include having the vehicle towed and the driver is required to complete mandatory repairs under Section 66 of the Traffic Safety Act before their license plate and registration is returned.

The initiative is done along with regular traffic enforcement that is done daily by members of the Traffic Response Unit and Patrols.
