Lethbridge Mayor says Alberta Budget 2019 is one of restraint, and not surprising

Plenty of reaction to Thursday’s first budget from Jason Kenney’s UCP government.

The budget holds the line on funding for health and education, however it cuts the amount of money coming to municipalities and puts off infrastructure projects.

Lethbridge Mayor Chris Spearman says the City supports the province’s overall plan for financial restraint, however he does have concerns.

He says the big takeaway for Lethbridge is a reduction in the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) Capital funding. He says the city has relied on that money in the past for significant capital projects but won’t be able to rely on it in the near future so some major projects will likely have to be delayed.

Spearman says one budget bright spot is a committment to funding addictions supports, something he notes Lethbridge desperately needs.
