Extreme wind pounds parts of southern Alberta Friday

Extreme wind gusts causing travel issues across southern Alberta Friday afternoon.

Nanton RCMP issued an advisory for travel after wind speeds were clocked in the 150 km/h range. Along Highway 22, between Turner Valley and the Crowsnest Pass, wind speeds hit 172 km/h.

Environment Canada says many wind prone areas in the region have seen gusts in excess of 130 km/h.

People have reported flipped semi trucks and trailers along Highway 2 due to the conditions.

Wind warnings have been extended to include Lethbridge, Taber, Milk River, Vulcan, Carmangay, and Brooks and even the City of Calgary.

The weather office says these strong winds should ease off late Friday afternoon as the system blows through. A cold front moving in behind will bring a 20 degree drop in temperatures for Lethbridge and area on Saturday with daytime highs around +1°C for the weekend and dropping to -6°C by Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 28-29).

The weather is expected to warm up again by Halloween.
