Alberta Government wants 2 per cent wage roll back in public sector

The provincial government announcing Tuesday public sector wage arbitration will continue next month with the expiry of Bill 9 but with rollbacks.

Finance Minister Travis Toews says MLAs have rolled back their salaries by 5 per cent and the Premier has cut his salary by 10 per cent.

He says the government can’t ask Alberta taxpayers to fund public-sector pay raises when far too many workers in the private sector have lost their jobs and others have seen significant pay cuts.

Toews says the revision moves from the previous position of no increase for 2019 to an average 2 per cent reduction for collective agreements that include a wage reopener this year.
