Commemorative crosswalk installed in Lethbridge to honour veterans

The City of Lethbridge is honouring and celebrating veterans ahead of Remembrance Day.

A commemorative Remembrance Day/Veterans Crosswalk is being installed at the intersection of 4 Avenue South and 10 Street South. It is being set up near the Cenotaph.

Crews will be painting on Tuesday, October 28, and to accommodate the work, 4 Avenue South between 10 Street South and 11 Street South will be closed for the day.

The City notes that traffic and transit routes will be detoured, and if needed, the painting team will complete final touches on Wednesday. Officials say the schedule is dependent on weather, as high wind gusts could cause potential delays.

The Lethbridge Legion chose the crosswalk design, and it features a soldier silhouette inspired by the Cenotaph statue.

The design also includes the phrase ‘Lest We Forget’ in English and “IHTAISSKSINI’PA” in Blackfoot. That term was interpreted by Blood Tribe Elder Martin Heavy Head as “So that we know”. Additionally, the French version, “Nous nous souviendrons” is included.

The City adds that details on Remembrance Day ceremonies will be shared closer to November 11.
