City councillors to bring Lethbridge ward system discussion to council Tuesday

Lethbridge city councillors will debate whether to examine a ward system during their meeting Tuesday.

Councillors Belinda Crowsen and Jenn Schmidt-Remple plan to introduce a motion requesting a review of a ward system for the city.

If council agrees, the motion would send the topic to the next governance committee meeting, scheduled for February. According to a post on Crowsen’s social media, if council rejects the review the matter would end for this term.

In the post, Crowsen wrote: “We’ve drafted the motion this way because we want to know if there is support from this council to move ahead or not before we spend staff time or money on it.”

Crowsen is encouraging residents who have opinions on the proposal to contact their city councillors before Tuesday’s meeting. She noted there will be no opportunity for public comments at the meeting, unless council unanimously agrees to waive the rule. If the review advances to committee, public input would be welcome at that stage.
