Man charged after Crowsnest Pass Mountie allegedly assaulted

A Calgary man faces charges after a Crowsnest Pass RCMP officer was reportedly assaulted during a traffic stop.

At around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, Mounties responded to reports of an erratic driver on Highway 22, south of Highway 520. Police say the initial reports suggested that the driver might have been impaired.

The RCMP stopped the vehicle, and when an officer approached the car, a man was reportedly seen walking by the trunk while another was sitting in the passenger seat. Police say the officer smelled alcohol and placed the man under arrest. However, RCMP reports that the man resisted and assaulted the officer before running from the scene.

The Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services attended the scene, and a police dog was deployed, eventually finding and subduing the suspect. Police say the man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 58-year-old suspect, from Calgary, is charged with the following:

  • Assaulting a police officer;
  • Resisting arrest;
  • Obstruction;
  • Prohibited Operation of a motor vehicle;
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; and
  • Refusal of an ASD Demand.

The suspect has been remanded into custody and is set to be in Lethbridge court on January 12.
