Recycling contest supports local 4-H and agricultural clubs

An agricultural contest is back for another year.

The Great Twine Round-Up invites farmers and ranchers to collect their clean, used plastic baler twine and drop it off for recycling at participating locations.

Those who drop off the most twine could win one of four $3,000 grand prizes, with that prize supporting local 4-H and agricultural clubs in their community.

The contest is operated by Cleanfarms, and is part of the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group’s ‘Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It!’ program. The project is also supported by funds from the provincial government and Alberta Beef Producers.

One of the major drivers of the contest is to keep baler twine out of landfills.

Twine that is collected during the contest is recycled into new products like car parts, greenhouse pots and trays, composite decking, and dimensional lumber.

Officials note that last year, the Great Twine Round-Up saw over 16,000 kilograms of used plastic baler twine dropped off for recycling.

A map of participating drop-off sites is available through the Cleanfarms website, as is more information about the contest.

The Great Twine Round-Up runs until May 31, 2026.
