ASIRT investigating in-custody death of 22-year-old man in Lethbridge

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death of a 22-year-old man in Lethbridge.

Lethbridge Police Service said officers responded July 12 to a report of a man on the High Level Bridge. Three officers attended and one officer approached the man.

Police said the officer and the man interacted before the man moved away and went over the bridge. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the officers were injured.

As required under the Police Act, the director of law enforcement was notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was directed to conduct an independent investigation.

ASIRT investigators arrived in Lethbridge Monday. The investigation remains active as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.

ASIRT and the Police Review Commission provide independent oversight of law enforcement in Alberta. ASIRT investigates incidents involving serious injury or death, as well as matters considered serious or sensitive.
