Alberta opens applications for $107M in student funding

More than $107 million in scholarships, awards and bursaries are available to students for the 2026-27 school year.

Applications opened Aug. 4, with the province saying the non-repayable funding is intended to help more Albertans pursue post-secondary education and graduate with less debt.

The New Beginnings Bursary will support 2,400 students, up from 1,000 last year.

Advanced Education Minister Myles McDougall said in a statement that investing in students is an investment in the province’s future.

“Scholarships, awards and bursaries help reduce financial barriers, recognize student achievement and ensure more Albertans can access the education and training they need to succeed,” McDougall said.

Students can apply online through Alberta Student Aid for 20 scholarships and awards. Unlike student loans, the scholarships and awards do not have to be repaid.

The province estimates the funding will support about 50,400 students in 2026-27.

Heritage Scholarships also provide non-repayable financial support to Alberta students. More than 24,000 students received the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship in 2025-26, for a total of nearly $50 million, according to the province.

More than $1 billion in student aid is also available this year through loans and grants.

For loans and grants, the province recommends students apply at least 60 days before their program begins.

The province said the scholarship, award and bursary funding is intended to help students develop workforce skills while reducing financial barriers to post-secondary education.
