Meals on Wheels program to be supported by Fuel Good Day fundraiser

On Sept. 15, you’re invited to visit the west and south side Co-op gas bars to fuel up and help support the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization’s Meals on Wheels program.

LSCO is a recipient of this year’s Fuel Good Day fundraiser, courtesy of South Country Co-op.

The annual initiative brings communities together to support local charities and nonprofit organizations through everyday purchases at participating locations.

South Country Co-op will donate:

  • 5¢/litre of fuel (all grades of gasoline and diesel)
  • 5¢/pound of propane
  • $1 from every coffee, iced coffee, or Big Cool Slush
  • $2 from every Extreme Car Wash (Sept. 9–15) — customers also save $2 on these washes

Meals on Wheels provides a nutritious meal and a friendly visit from volunteers to home-bound older adults across Lethbridge and area and serves between 80 to 100 meals per day at a subsidized cost.

LSCO Executive Director Kaitlynn Weaver said for many older adults, a Meals on Wheels delivery is more than just a nutritious meal. “It’s an opportunity for social connection with our incredible volunteers and a lifeline that helps them stay safely at home.”

Subsidized options are based on income level, Weaver explained. “If folks are considered low income, they get their meals for between $6 to $8. Those who are higher income, they would pay about $12 per meal.”

The program is an easy and nutritious option to make sure seniors are getting proper nutrition throughout their older adult years, Weaver added.

Weaver noted the LSCO is very grateful for the volunteers that help out with the program.

“It keeps costs low. Things continue to get more expensive,” Weaver said.

According to Weaver, South Country Co-op reached out and told the LSCO this year’s Fuel Good Day will support Meals on Wheels programs across southern Alberta.

Although the event takes place all day, the LSCO will be at both west and south gas bars between 12-6 p.m. with games, which will include prizes to be won, a volunteer caricature artist, washing windows, pumping gas, and promoting the importance of Meals on Wheels in the community.
