New sentencing to take place in Lethbridge manslaughter case

The case of a local man, whose second degree murder conviction was recently overturned, came up in Lethbridge Provincial Court Monday (June 24).

27 year old Addison Wakefield was charged in January 2013, along with Michael Mitchell, in the stabbing death of 58 year old George Span.

Both were convicted of second degree murder and automatically sentenced to life in prison.

However, the Supreme Court of Canada recently overturned a decision by the Alberta Court of Appeal which upheld Wakefield’s conviction.

Instead of ordering a new trial, a manslaughter conviction was accepted and the case is being sent back to the trial judge who will deliver a new sentence.

A sentencing date is expected to be set August 26th.
