Alberta reaches $10-a-day child care funding agreement with federal government

EDMONTON, AB – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says affordable child care is now within reach for all Alberta families with a new funding agreement announced on Monday (Nov. 15).

Alberta is the eighth province to sign such a deal with Ottawa, leaving Ontario and News Brunswick as the only two provinces left negotiating.

Premier Jason Kenney says Albertans tax dollars will now work even harder in their favour. “This agreement means bringing 3.8-billion tax dollars – paid by Albertans to Ottawa – back to Albertans to address a key priority for so many families. This means that parents in Alberta will see a reduction in their fees of an average of 50-percent in early 2022, and will pay an average of $10 a day by 2025-26.”

Ottawa has committed $30-billion to this national program over the next five years, and another $8.3-billion in ongoing funding.

Proudly born in 1994, I grew up most of my life in Sylvan Lake, AB and I've lived in the Lethbridge since 2012. I'm a below average golfer on a good day, I take as many hiking trips to Waterton as possible in the summer and I love my two cats, Outlaw and Jynx, and my dog, Maverick, more than most people I know. I look forward to providing accurate, timely news coverage in southern Alberta for plenty of years to come!
