EDMONTON, AB – It looks as though we’ll be ringing in the New Year with record high COVID-19 cases in Alberta.
Preliminary estimates released Thursday, Dec. 30 (similar to Tuesday’s update) showed roughly 4,000 people had tested positive for the virus on Dec. 29.
If correct, that would crush the Dec. 28 record case count of 2,775.
The positivity rate on Dec. 29 is estimated to be 30 percent which would also be a record high.
Thursday’s live media update was postponed until Friday, Dec. 31 with Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw saying she was taking part in the COVID-19 Cabinet Committee meeting to discuss the latest developments and trends involving the Omicron variant.
It’s not clear if local COVID data will be updated Friday, with the Government of Alberta website stating “preliminary data will be posted on alberta.ca/covid19 on December 28 and 30. Regular reporting will resume January 4.”
As of the last full data release, Lethbridge had 197 active cases of COVID-19.
