An initiative aims to inspire and empower residents to plant and care for trees on their private property. The 1,000 Trees in 2023 initiative looks to contribute to a thriving, climate-resilient urban forest for future generations.
The majority of the city’s trees are planted on private property and many of the large trees were planted decades ago by residents.
“Planting a tree is more than a gardening activity; it’s a legacy project,” says Paige Rosner, environmental education and community projects lead at Helen Schuler Nature Centre. “A tree planted today will make its greatest impact 30-50 years from now, providing shade, beauty and ecological benefits to future generations.”
Thanks to help from the Helen Schuler Nature Centre, there is a tree guide that explains the best trees to get that will thrive in southern Alberta.
There is also a tree registry so community members can register their trees.
More information on the 1,000 Trees in 2023 initiative can be found on the Helen Schuler Nature Centre website.
