Majority of Albertans polled want carbon tax abolished: Angus Reid

The majority of Albertans who took part in a new survey from the Angus Reid Institute say they want to eliminate the federal carbon tax.

155 of the 1,602 Canadians polled in the survey were from Alberta. Of those, 59 per cent wanted to get rid of the tax entirely, with a further nine per cent wanting it lowered. 16 per cent of Albertans asked wanted to maintain the current level and 17 per cent believed the increase should go forward as planned. The independent research organization found that of the Albertans polled, there was a five per cent uptick in those who answered they would raise the tax from the last poll they did on the topic in November 2023.

The only province that polled higher on wanting the carbon tax abolished was Saskatchewan with 61 per cent.

At the beginning of 2024 the Government of Saskatchewan stopped collecting carbon tax on all forms of home heating, a decision that 71 per cent of Albertans surveyed agreed with.

Those who support the federal Liberal, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois parties had the most favourable views of the carbon tax when surveyed, with three-quarters of those who support the Conservative party saying it should be eliminated.

Out of all the 1,602 individuals surveyed across the province, 40 per cent responded they would like to abolish the carbon tax, with 11 per cent wanting to lower it, 27 per cent wanting to maintain the current level, and 22 per cent want to go forward with the increase planned for April.
