Province opens applications for new active communities initiative

The province is opening grant applications for its new $30 million Active Communities Initiative to support recreation facilities. It is open to community groups and non-profits looking to build or enhance sport and recreation spaces in their communities. The province says it is intended for small and mid-size projects, such as skating rinks, pools, indoor turf centres or pickleball courts.

“Across Alberta, the local skating rinks, indoor soccer fields and rec centres are the hubs of their communities. They are gathering places where people of all ages and backgrounds can build social bonds, create a sense of belonging and enjoy the benefits of being active. Through the Active Communities Initiative, we’re building healthier families and more resilient communities by helping to create and improve spaces so that more Albertans can be more active more often,” says Joseph Schow, minister of tourism and sport.

The program is a fund matching initiative and can support projects with up to $1.5 million.

“It’s incredibly important for Albertans to have access to affordable sport and recreation opportunities. I’m proud Alberta’s government is making this a reality by supporting our communities through the Active Communities Initiative,” says Nathan Neudorf, minister of affordability and utilities and MLA for Lethbridge-East.
