For the first time in almost a decade, two or more players off the Lethbridge Hurricanes roster were selected in the NHL entry-level draft.
Over the weekend, forward Miguel Marques was picked in the third round of the NHL draft going 87th overall to the Nashville Predators, while goaltender Harrison Meneghin was picked in the seventh round going 206th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Marques was originally picked by the ‘Canes in the 2021 Western Hockey League Prospects draft 10th overall. Last year, while playing with the Lethbridge team, he recorded a career-high last season, with 74 points including 28 goals, and 57 penalty minutes. Since joining the WHL team he recorded 100 points and 94 penalty minutes in 136 career games. Last season Marques received the ‘Canes Fan Favourite Award and was the only and is the first Lethbridge player to be drafted to the Nashville team.
Meneghin was originally signed by the Hurricanes back in 2021 after going undrafted in the WHL Prospects Draft. He played in 53 regular season games with a 27-20-5-0, including three shutouts last season. During his time with the Hurricanes, he played in 90 games. Last year he was named Goaltender of the Year for the WHL and was also a nominee for the WHL’s Goaltender of the Year Award. He is the seventh Hurricane to be selected by the Lightning since 1992; joining the ranks of Brantt Myhres, Mark Szoke, Bryce Salvador, Nick Tarnasky, Mitch Fadden and Carter Ashton.
This is the sixth time in the last eight years a player from the Lethbridge Hurricanes has been drafted. Thirty-four WHL players were chosen in the 2024 NHL Draft.
