Petwise Blog: Celebrating Summer with the Songs of Canaries at Petland

The songs of summer and the sounds associated with the season include the happy bird tunes we hear outdoors. At Petland, our renowned singers are the unmistakable melodies of male canaries! While female canaries are capable of singing, they rarely do and have a much softer song.

Male canaries learn their sweet, intricate songs from their fathers or other male members of their family. They can also pick up pieces of songs from outside songbirds or recordings of other canaries. Sometimes, they sing to attract a mate, but they also sing simply because they enjoy it!

Canaries belong to the finch family and are native to the Canary Islands, Azores, and Madeira—European islands off the northwest coast of Africa. They get their name from the Canary Islands.

A big flight cage is an excellent option for them, but the very best home would be a large aviary. This also makes keeping varieties of canaries and finches more successful!

At Petland, you will find yellow, red factor, and Gloster canaries. The Gloster Corona canary, with its Beatles-style mop top hairdo, is particularly distinct and my favorite! Often yellow with brown “hair” feathers, they look like they’re wearing a little wig!
