Lethbridge City Council has approved a transitional housing facility in the Scenic Heights area on the south side.
On Monday (Sept. 16), Council voted 5-2 in favour of the 20 bed group home, which will be run by Streets Alive Mission.
Council had to change the zoning to allow for the facility to be on that property. Streets Alive plans to buy the property in order to establish a transitional housing facility for women.
The existing home on that land, at 1604 Scenic Heights South, would provide the supervised residency component of what would be a voluntary recovery-focused residential program.
A number of people showed up to a public hearing at City Hall Monday, to speak both for and against the group home.
City Councillors Ryan Parker and Blaine Hyggen voted against the rezoning, while Councillor Jeff Carlson wasn’t at Council Monday and Councillor Joe Mauro didn’t take part in the vote due to a conflict-of-interest.
Streets Alive has also developed a Neighbourhood Communications Plan that is a requirement of the development permit for this type of use.
