The City is of Lethbridge is becoming a little more transparent.
Councillors this week approved a Compensation Disclosure List be made public every year on the City’s web site .
That list will identify position titles, salary ranges and information about pension and benefits for all employment positions and elected officials at the City of Lethbridge.
City Councillor Jeffrey Coffman says more and more citizens use social media these days, noting it’s important for local government to be open, providing factual information wherever possible. “By adding a Compensation Disclosure List to the City’s website, we are allowing our citizens access to the information they may be seeking about public dollars from a credible source.”
Employee names and exact salaries, however will not be published. The City of Lethbridge notes this approach will help balance the opportunity to provide factual information while respecting employees’ privacy.
Coffman says this is just one more way Councillors can be accountable to the citizens they serve.
This type of public salary disclosure is in line with other cities like Calgary and Red Deer which publish lists on their respective websites as well
