The city is taking the next steps towards a sustainable future by approving the Waste Management Master Plan.
Lethbridge City Council approved the plan, originally presented during the October 24th Governance Standing Policy Committee meeting by members of the Waste & Environment department, on Tuesday. Councillor Belinda Crowson, says the approved plan touches on environmental responsibility which is one of Lethbridge Council’s six strategic priorities.
“This plan will provide the necessary framework to actively enhance and sustain the natural environment and build a more environmentally friendly future for our city,” Crowson says.
Department General Manager Mandi Parker says, council approving the plan is an example of their commitment to environmental stewardship.
“The Waste Management Master Plan will help shape the future for waste management in Lethbridge,” Parker says.
In 2008 the city put in place the the Waste Diversion/Waste Prevention Plan, which was the original waste master plan which city officials say was used as a guide to “reduce waste and increase landfill diversion.” In May of 2020, community engagement for the plan started, with 1,800 residents responding.
