How the Grinch won’t steal Christmas: Tips from RCMP on package safety

Tips on how to keep the Grinch from stealing Christmas this year are being shared by police to keep the holiday season a jolly one.

According to RCMP officials, even with the ongoing postal strike, there are still parcels being delivered across Alberta as people continue to buy gifts. With the influx of package deliveries, police officials say that also means an increase in thefts. The holiday months are said to typically be the months with the highest reported number of alleged package thefts. In December 2023, RCMP officers received 61 reports of stolen packages reported across the province with an additional 90 cases reported in January 2024.

Tips mounties have to keep Grinch’s from grabbing online purchases include opting for a “signature required” delivery when possible or by adding instructions for the delivery to be left out of sight when dropped off. Another suggestion is to install a doorbell camera to keep an eye on your front porch.

Other ways shoppers can ensure their purchases will not be nabbed according to RCMP is by tracking shipments to know when they are delivered and getting someone you trust to bring it in if you are not home; or have it delivered at a time you know you will be home. For larger or more valuable packages a suggestion is to have the package shipped to a delivery service pick-up location to ensure they are delivered safely.
