Hurricanes goalie Koen Cleaver listed on NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings

A Lethbridge Hurricanes goalie is getting noticed by the National Hockey League. 

Koen Cleaver has been ranked on the NHL Central Scouting Service’s Midterm Ranking, placed at the 16th spot among North American goaltender. Originally from Port Alberni, British Columbia, Cleaver was selected by Lethbridge 48th overall in the third round of the 2022 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft.  

So far this season, he has appeared in 14 regular season games, securing a record of 6-8-0-0 with a 3.37 goals against average and a .890 save percentage with one shutout.  

In 18 career games, Cleaver has posted a record of 6-10-1-0 with a 3.80 goals against average and an .877 save percentage. 

At the start of the 2024-25 season, Cleaver was named the WHL Goaltender of the Week as he helped the Hurricanes to a 2-1 overtime win against the Rebels in Red Deer.  

In that Saturday, September 21 matchup, Cleaver stopped 30 of Red Deer’s 31 shots, including three goal attempts in overtime.

Cleaver was just one of seven WHL goalies listed on the Midterm Rankings. During the 2023-24 season, Cleaver laced up his skates in 15 regular season games for the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy U18 Prep team in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League, where he posted a record of 7-7-0 with a 4.08 goals against average and .896 save percentage. Cleaver represented Canada-White at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. At that event, he posted a 2.43 goals against average and an .875 save percentage in two starts while winning a gold medal. 

In total, 64 WHL players were listed on the Midterm Rankings, which can be viewed at the NHL website.
