U of L set to present production of ‘Paradise Lost’

The University of Lethbridge’s Faculty of Fine Arts is all set to present its first signature event of the new year.

Audiences will be able to enjoy a contemporary adaptation of John Milton’s poem “Paradise Lost”, with the Mainstage production by Erin Shields.

The production is the winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award and is a feminist adaptation of the 1667 English poem. The U of L-presented show is directed by alumna Jamie Dunsdon and features designs from Emmy-nominated costume designer and alumna Rebecca Toon, along with MFA student Lucy Du, who used the lighting and set design of the show as the basis of her master’s thesis project.

Dunsdon says she’s excited to be back on campus to direct a Mainstage production for the Drama Department’s alumni season.

“When one of my former professors heard I’d been dying to work on ‘Paradise Lost,’ fellow alumna Rebecca Toon and I were invited to take part. We spent many happy hours here back in the early 2000s and are so honoured to be welcomed back,” Dundsdon states.

“[U of L] is where I found my passion and where I began to build my skills as a director, so it’s a genuine delight to return a couple decades later to bring this piece to life with the next generation of artists.”

The show runs nightly at 7:30 p.m. from February 10 to 14 in the University Theatre, with tickets available online.
