Pronghorns wrestlers win two silvers at U of L-hosted tournament

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns wrestling team hosted over 120 athletes last weekend, with local competitors winning several medals.

The Pronghorns Open tournament was held Friday, January 24 and Saturday, January 25. Friday night’s dual meet saw the ‘Horns battle the University of Calgary Dinos, which the U of C won.

During Saturday’s open tournament, U of L athletes captured two silver medals.

Payton Shields won silver in the 59 kilogram women’s category, with Thomas Ellis-Toddington capturing silver in the 72 kilogram men’s category.

Other Lethbridge athletes placed at the tournament:

  • Danya Braun (65 kg Women’s) – 6th
  • Brydget Dearling (83 kg Women’s) – 4th
  • Andro De Vos (65 kg Men’s) – 4th
  • Edward Isamhalieiev (82 kg Men’s) – 4th
  • Colton Boxwell (82 kg Men’s) – 6th
  • Tyler Saruwatari (100 kg Men’s) – 6th

“Each step these athletes take forward is actually a leap,” says Pronghorns head coach Shawn Daye-Finley. “It’s very rewarding watching these young people go from a first-year team last year to their level of development this year, taking more and more points away from their [Canada West] competitors. We will only improve with time until we become a force in USPORT wrestling.”

The Pronghorns wrestling team started competing during the 2023-24 season.
