Coaldale’s Civic Square officially opens

Phase 3 of the Civic Square project in Coaldale is now complete, after a ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday to celebrate the grand opening of Civic Plaza.

Civic Plaza serves as Coaldale’s “community living room” and is designed to bring residents together across all seasons.

In the spring and summer months, the space will come alive with markets, festivals, concerts and outdoor performances, including Summer Fest. During the fall and winter months, a state-of-the-art refrigeration system will transform the Plaza into a community ice rink — a perfect setting for family skates, holiday celebrations, cozy winter evenings under the lights and Winter Fest.

According to the Town of Coaldale, the Plaza also features natural gas fire pits, seating areas, picnic tables, public restrooms and a concession stand.

“For over a year, we’ve been planning and anticipating the day when this space would officially open,” says Mayor Jack Van Rijn. “Civic Plaza is more than just a public square — it’s a place where neighbours can meet, families can gather and where the community can come together to celebrate, reflect and enjoy everything our town has to offer.”

Bringing the Plaza to life was a group effort, with financial and/or in-kind support, including from the Government of Canada’s Community Revitalization Fund.

Another important contributor to the project was the Yip family, whose generous land donation played a key role in making the Plaza possible.

“On behalf of Council, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making Civic Plaza a reality,” adds Van Rijn. “From those who provided financial support to those who donated resources and land, your generosity and dedication have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. This space will serve as Coaldale’s community living room for generations to come.”
