‘Skip the Scale’ campaign raises over $10K for local charities in inaugural year

A local company is lending a helping hand by ‘Skipping the Scale’.

National Salvage in Lethbridge is celebrating a successful year of its ‘Skip the Scale’ charitable initiative. The program allowed residents and businesses to drop off scrap metal, which National Salvage then turned into cash and delivered to community groups.

Some of the beneficiaries of the project have included:

Since the program launched on May 1, 2024, National Salvage says 101,043 pounds of scrap metal were donated between 10 different charities.

Cody Dahl, Sales and Heavy Equipment Operator at National Salvage says that translates to $10,945 raised for local groups and programs.

“I’m happy that the community really showed up this last year. They came out and all their small donations really added up,” Dahl says. “It’s really impressive to see.”

Dahl adds reception to the program has been positive from all parties involved.

“All the charities – they are super appreciative of it,” he notes. “The community members that see the bin, they are happy that their scrap metal can go somewhere besides just going in the landfill. They can drop it off here and it goes to help people in the community.”

Dahl says it took a bit of time for the program to pick up, but as the months went on, more and more groups got involved and awareness of the campaign grew.

“In May of last year, it was super slow, and I was even going out and collecting stuff for charities and putting it in the bin just to kind of get the word out, and get it rolling and then, it just kind of caught on,” he remarks.

Dahl says going into the program’s second year, the whole slate of charities is full.

“I’ve got people asking about next year already, so we’ll just continue doing it for as long as it has momentum,” he adds.

Dahl says he is looking forward to getting more groups involved moving forward.

“We just try to help all kinds of different groups, from the homeless, to veterans, to pets, the elderly – we just try to hit every demographic we can to try and help out.”

Dahl invites any local charitable groups that would like to get involved to contact him at National Salvage at (403) 328-1721.

He says updates on what charities they will be supporting each month will be posted on the National Salvage Facebook and Instagram pages.
