Closed door reduces damage in south Lethbridge house fire

A closed door made a major difference in a south Lethbridge house fire.

Crews from three stations responded to the 1800 block of 18 Street South at around 2:10 p.m. on Monday, May 13. A total of 19 firefighters found light smoke coming from the one-story home. Inside the residence, responders tackled heavy smoke and heat but contained the incident to a bedroom on the main floor.

Officials say the people inside the house closed the bedroom door before leaving, a move that helped stop the fire from spreading.

“Closing doors during a fire, when safe to do so, can make a big difference in containing the spread of flames,” reads a statement.

There were no injuries reported, and damage is estimated to be between $50,000 and $75,000. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
