Coalhurst council approves 4.32 per cent property tax increase

Coalhurst council has approved a residential property tax increase.

The decision came with the finalization of its 2025 budget and Mill Rate Bylaw. Residents can expect a 4.32 per cent increase, which is down from the projected 4.62 per cent.

Officials say a major factor was the 14.45 per cent jump in the Alberta Education Tax requisition. The Town collects taxes for the province and the Green Acres Foundation but has no control over those budgets. Of the $3.63 million in total taxes to be collected, $2.6 million will support municipal operations and $1.03 million will be remitted to the requisitioning bodies.

The residential mill rate will be going down slightly from 7.2673 to 7.2597. The non-residential mill rate will go up from 9.6840 to 9.9039.

TAX NOTICES

Typically, tax notices are mailed out in June for Coalhurst residents, with payment due by July 31. Due to a potential disruption in postal service, property owners can reach out to the Town of Coalhurst office at 403-381-3033 to get a copy of their notice.

Officials note that as per the Municipal Government Act, failure to get your tax notice is not a valid reason for late payments or non-payments.

You can see the full budget and mill rate bylaw at the Town of Coalhurst website.
