Lethbridge man wins lottery for third time in less than a year

Luck is certainly on David Serkin’s side.

The Lethbridge man has won the lottery not once, not twice, but three times in the last year. Most recently, he won the $1 million prize on the May 3 LOTTO 6/49 Classic draw.

His streak started with a $500,000 win on the August 20, 2024 LOTTO MAX draw. That was followed by a $1 million win on the November 16 LOTTO 6/49.

With his most recent prize win, Serkin’s grand total is at $2.5 million.

“I know the odds are astronomical,” Serkin says.

“I don’t think it’ll happen again, but I still like buying tickets.”

Officials note that the odds of winning the LOTTO MAX jackpot or a MAXMILLIONS prize are both one in 33,294,800. The odds for the Gold Ball Draw are determined for each draw by the total number of selections that are issued across the country.

Serkin won his most recent $1 million on the May 3 LOTTO 6/49 Gold Ball draw with the selection of a white ball numbered 24645097-05.

He says he has been playing since LOTTO 6/49 launched in 1982.

“You check your ticket and if you win, you’re happy. If you don’t, you can always try again,” he says. “I’m a cancer survivor and I’m retired, so I am just grateful for all of it.”

Serkin says he bought this ticket while purchasing gas. He says he saw the Gold Ball draw was getting close to the final ball selection and thought, “What do I have to lose?”

The Lethbridge winner says this latest victory had his wife and friends shocked.

“I went for coffee with the boys after I checked my ticket,” he said. “They asked to see it and said, ‘Not again?!’”

Serkin says his wife is still in disbelief. After taking his wife to Hawaii with his last win, he plans to treat her to a trip within Canada. “Now, we’re going to Newfoundland!”

Serkin bought his winning ticket from the Shell gas station at 2440 Fairway Plaza Road South in Lethbridge.
