Employees at PURE Casino in Lethbridge have voted to unionize.
In total, 155 workers gave the thumbs up to join western Canada’s largest union, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, also known as AUPE.
The Alberta Labour Relations Board granted employees the AUPE certification back on April 17. The AUPE says the PURE Casino employees join more than 100,000 public and private sector workers who are advocating “for fair wages and better working conditions”.
“The staff at PURE Casino Lethbridge know that there is power in a union,” states AUPE Vice-President Curtis Jackson. “We are ready to leverage that power to get the wages and working conditions they deserve.”
A date has yet to be set for the start of the collective bargaining process between PURE Casino and the new AUPE Local 118 Chapter 028 members.
The AUPE says that date will be decided soon.
“Employers and government policies in Alberta have been moving in the wrong direction – this is the proof of that,” Jackson adds.
“With determination and support from our fellow workers, we can stand up to our employers and demand the collective agreements we deserve.”
