Kids can practice their reading skills over the summer with the Lethbridge Public Library’s Ready, Set, Read! program.
The program is just one of many activities scheduled at the Main Branch and Crossings Branch in July.
Kids are paired with student volunteers to read together, followed by games, activities and special guests. Registration is required and the program runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
From July 7-11, the theme is Animals at the Main Branch. From July 14-18, the theme is Music at the Crossings Branch. From July 21-25, the theme is Dinosaurs at the Main Branch, and from July 28-Aug. 1, the theme is Space at the Crossings Branch.
Resource Sharing Librarian Jonathan Jarvie says both locations have a lot going on this summer to help support the community and build on some of the programs already being offered.
On July 10 at the Westminster Pool from 5:15-7:45 p.m., it’s Movie Night in the Pool featuring Moana 2. Registration is required and there will also be free ice cream. Kick off summer reading with Splash into Stories.
“In the past, I think we’ve had up to 60 kids – 30 pairs, or so,” Jarvie notes. “It’s one of our more popular reading programs in the summer.”
There’s a Free Vegetable and Flower Share July 13 and July 29 from 2-4 p.m. at the Main Branch.
This event is an opportunity to share produce and flowers with the community or grab some goodies yourself.
“It’s a community need. People are always on Facebook groups and stuff who grow too much in their garden, so people can share and everything,” adds Jarvie.
Jarvie notes there’s also a seed library that is quite popular.
On July 26, the Main Branch hosts a local author reading by Tina Kowalski from 2-3 p.m.
Kowalski will be discussing her book How to Emotionally Survive Cancer.
“We always try to get local authors in to have the community be aware of their book,” says Jarvie. “She’s a great author and has helped organize a local author fair in the past with us. We’re looking forward to being able to partner with her again.”
Jarvie says the Library is a great place to come in the summer, “because we’ve always got different programs going on.”
“It’s a nice cool place, so if you want to beat the summer heat come in and join us here. We’ve always got different programs for all ages. Everyone is welcome and there will be something for them.”
