Street Wheelers Weekend revs up for another great year of burnouts, classic cruisin’

Get your motor running and head out to the city streets of Lethbridge, as the Street Wheelers Weekend revs up for another high-octane event.

The Classic Car Controlled Cruise kicks off July 11, followed by the 100-Foot Dash July 12 and the Show and Shine July 13.

President of the Street Wheelers Car Club Alex Dewar believes everyone’s been looking forward to the annual weekend.  “Hopefully, the weather holds up. We hope to see familiar faces and hopefully some new ones.”

This year marks the second year for the cruise, adds Dewar. “We brought it back after a bit of a hiatus. We had a lot of lessons learned from last year. We’re adding an additional entrance at 18 Street South heading north onto 3 Avenue to improve flow because there was a lot of good feedback we had last year. We want to make things more enjoyable for everybody.”

“We’re looking forward to having the two entry points to streamline everything and not have as much backlog and just give the spectators everything they want to see and more,” Dewar notes.

According to Dewar, close to 700 entries were a part of the controlled cruise last year. “We’re anticipating hopefully the same amount. We really want to encourage online registration. That’s essentially a requirement for the cruise to make things a lot more seamless this year.”

Registering beforehand online will help make things easier for volunteers the day of the event, Dewar says.

Dewar adds there’s some big, powered vehicles ready to roll for the 100-Foot Dash. “If you feel like seeing some big burnouts and fast cars, that’s the place to be. Definitely bring a hat and some sunscreen because it gets pretty warm.”

With the Show and Shine, Dewar says, the push is on for participants to register online prior to the event. “This is our first year of online registration. Again, we want to get as much as we can to anticipate our capacity of about 600 vehicles to be scattered around Galt Gardens. We will have our vendor row with some great merchandise vendors and some food vendors.”

Dewar says the weekend event could not be a possibility without the support of the community, club members and local businesses – big or small. “They’re all equally important to us.”

“We can support them, and they can support us. It’s a good equal exchange of value, which is fantastic.”
