April 7th declared Green Shirt Day by Lethbridge council

Lethbridge city council again made an exception to a decades-old resolution preventing the mayor’s office from making declarations, in order to declare April 7 as Green Shirt Day.

The day is a way to honour, recognize and remember all the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018, specifically Lethbridge resident Logan Boulet.

Boulet saved six lives by donating his organs, something he signed up for after being inspired by his coach Ric Suggitt, who saved lives in the same way in 2017. Within weeks of the crash and news on Boulet’s donation, more than 150,000 people signed up to become organ donors.

“Following the tragedy, Canadians discovered the incredible legacy Logan and Ric created,” says Mayor Hyggen. “They had a major role in inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors. This is something that Lethbridge City Council wants to continue to recognize.”

Council voted unanimously on March 21 to declare the day and Hyggen said he wants to  continue bringing it forward annually, rather than a one-time declaration.
