Ceremonies taking place all across the country Thursday (June 6) to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
A special remembrance took place as well in Lethbridge at the Cenotaph downtown.
Legion Manager Jeffery Alden says this city has a local connection to that historic day. “As noted on the Cenotaph, we have several soldiers from the area who went into the Second World War. Mr. Daley perished on the beaches of Juno. He was one of the local fatalities from this area. We felt it was very important from the local level to do something to commemorate the 75th as well.”
D-Day took place on June 6, 1944 when allied forces stormed the beaches of France to liberate Europe during the Second World War.
Alden says it’s important these types of events take place so people will always know what happened. “I mean for the young people it’s a distant memory. If they don’t study in the history books and learn about it and learn from the stories of the actual veterans who were there and I say we are getting low on those folks, I think the importance will be lost.”
D-Day ceremonies were also held in France to commemorate the day.
