Record number of COVID-related deaths reported in Alberta on Saturday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A record number of COVID-19 related fatalities were reported across Alberta on Saturday (Dec. 12).

Another 22 Albertans died due to complications from the virus between Friday (Dec. 11) and Saturday (Dec. 12), bringing the total number of deaths province-wide to 719. The previous single day record was 20 deaths set back on Nov. 16.

Of those 22 deaths, two were reported in the Alberta Health Services (AHS) South Zone, one in Medicine Hat and the other in the MD of Taber.

A total of 1,717 new infections were also confirmed out 21,725 tests on Saturday (Dec. 12), pushing the active case count up to 20,562. The provincial positivity rate remains steady around 7.9%.

The same amount of people from Friday (Dec. 11), 681, remain in hospital. However, eight more have been moved to intensive care, with a total of 136 people currently being treated in the ICU.

Twenty-one new cases of COVID-19 were reported across the AHS South Zone on Saturday (Dec. 12), including seven in Lethbridge. The city currently has 216 active infections.

There were also five new cases in Medicine Hat, three in Lethbridge County and one new case reported in Cypress County, the MD of Taber, the County of Newell, Cardston County and the County of Warner.
