Lethbridge Police safely handle mental health related incident

LETHBRIDGE, AB – An incident in a west Lethbridge residential area resolving without injuries Wednesday evening (Jan. 27).

LPS were asking people to avoid the 500 block of Blackfoot Manor west just after 4:00 p.m., saying its critical incident team had been called out to assist with “a situation.”

Police released an update at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night (Jan. 27), saying one person was safely taken into custody and the incident had been resolved.

Another update Thursday morning (Jan. 28), says officers responded to the home around 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 27), following reports that a 34-year old man had been making concerning phone calls. The area was quickly contained, but LPS wasn’t able to establish communication with the man.

The Critical Incident Response and Tactical Teams were deployed shortly after, when police learned that there were weapons in the home.

Communication efforts continued for a few hours and distraction devices were also set off, until the man came out of the house without incident at about 5:45 p.m.

He was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act, but no charges are pending and the man’s identity will not be released.

No further comments are expected to be released.
