Crowsnest Pass motocross race organizers slapped with major fine

Organizers of a southern Alberta motocross race have been found guilty and slapped with a substantial fine in Lethbridge Provincial Court.

Back in 2014, roughly 100 riders crossed Racehorse Creek during a motocross event in the Crowsnest Pass.

This week, organizers of that event were sentenced after being convicted of causing serious harm to fish and specifically harming Westslope Cutthroat Trout, a species which is listed as “threatened.”

David Alan French of the Brooks Motocross Club has been fined $25,000 and the club itself was hit with a $45,000 penalty.

Of the total $70,000 in fines, $64,000 of that will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund where it can be put towards recovery activities to benefit aquatic species at risk in Alberta.

Riders on off highway vehicles, including motocross bikes, should only cross watercourses at designated crossings, such as bridges, and avoid putting their wheels in the water.
