City looks to rename section of Parkside Drive South

The city of Lethbridge is looking at renaming a section of Parkside Drive South to combat issues with addressing. A presentation at a civic works standing policy committee recommended the section be named Exhibition Way South, but members carried a motion to recommend council renames the road, without the name included.

“The curved roadway configuration for Parkside Drive South has resulted in an ad hoc approach to the addressing of city assets in Henderson Park and on the Exhibition site over the years. With the redevelopment of the Exhibition site and building a new facility, an influx of addressing requests for construction permitting has exposed this ad hoc approach and a lack of numerical sequential addresses,” said Janet Gutsell, senior subdivision planner. “The renaming of this street presents the opportunity to highlight the significance of the Exhibition and will coincide with the Exhbition’s branding for their new facility.”

Chair Belinda Crowson questioned the cost of renaming and Gutsell said it would be about $2,000 for street signs. She said the proposal was reviewed by city departments, including fire and EMS and transportation — Canada Post and the Lethbridge and district Exhibition also approved the idea.

No land titles would be affected by the change and no problems were identified, according to Gutsell.

The renaming will come to city council for approval.
