Update: police investigate fatal pedestrian collision

Update: Lethbridge police say one man is dead after a driver failed to stop for two pedestrians at a crosswalk on the north side on Tuesday. A 66 year old man was declared deceased at the scene and a 62 year old woman was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Police responded to the call around 3 p.m. on Jan 18 and EMS was already on scene. The woman was taken to Chinook Regional Hospital before being transferred by STARS to Calgary, where police say she remains in critical condition.

“Investigation determined a GMC truck was travelling eastbound on 26 Avenue North and proceeded to make a northbound turn onto 28 Street North striking the pedestrians as they crossed in the crosswalk,” reads a news release from the Lethbridge Police Service. “The driver immediately stopped and called 911.”

The incident is still under investigation and police say no further information is available at this time.

Lethbridge police are asking the public to avoid the intersection of 26 Ave and 28 St N as officers are on scene of a serious collision where two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle.

Police say the pedestrians were struck while crossing at the road.

This story will be updated when more information is available.
