Lethbridge man facing aggravated assault, unlawful confinement charges

A 59-year-old Lethbridge man is facing charges in connection with an alleged violent sexual assault and forcible confinement investigation.

Lethbridge Police says they responded to a residence on 16 Avenue on May 18th after receiving a report from a landlord in the house that an injured woman was found in the basement. An investigation soon lead to police to determine that she had met the accused earlier in the month outside the city and had been driven to Lethbridge. Authorities believe she was taken to the southside home, unlawfully confined and repeatedly sexually assaulted over the course of four days. The woman still remains in hospital with unknown injuries.

While police were still on scene at the home, a male matching the suspect’s description returned and was arrested without incident.

59-year-old Bernard Gibson is facing charges of aggravated sexual assault, unlawful confinement and failing to comply with bail conditions stemming from an unrelated incident where he was charged in March 2023 of sexual assault, assault and unlawful confinement in connection with an incident where a woman was held against her will and assaulted over the course of two days before she was able to escape.
