Stopping the Grinch this Christmas: Police share holiday home safety tips to deter thieves

With around two weeks to go until Christmas, the Lethbridge Police Service is sharing tips on how to keep the opportunities for crime low, whether you are home or away for the holidays.

The top tip from police is to keep all doors locked, including garages, sheds, and gates. A suggested step from police to deter thieves from breaking in is putting up motion-censored lights outside. If you plan to head out of town, police advise putting your lights on a timer to make it look like someone is home. As well while you are gone police are encouraging you to have someone check your house, shovel any snow off the sidewalk or driveway and collect any mail that is delivered.

If you are staying home this Christmas, LPS is advising to keep your Christmas tree and presents out of sight from windows and on Christmas morning not leaving empty boxes from gifts outside.

The final tip from police is to keep bushes and shrubbery trimmed, eliminating potential hiding spots for those looking to be a Grinch and steal Christmas.
